At the heart of Domaines Paul Mas is the winery, a place where old meets new in an ideal winemaking setting. At the Mas family’s original 1000-year-old estate winery, as well as three additional winery facilities throughout the Languedoc, Jean-Claude Mas has augmented his family’s time-honored winemaking expertise with significant investments in modern equipment and techniques, including stainless steel tanks, pneumatic presses and sophisticated temperature control.
While the day-to-day winery work is managed by a team of winemakers, Jean-Claude oversees all blending and aging decisions personally, striving to produce wines that are, above all, a pleasure to drink. Additionally, he creates wines that clearly express their fruit and unique terroir, which ranges from the coastal plains of Aud to the slopes of Herault.
“Our wines encompass a range of grape varieties and styles, from the bright and sassy Paul Mas Estate Picpoul de Pinet to our brooding and mysterious single-vineyard Clos de Mures (a traditional blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre) and everything in between. Always, we emphasize the highest quality at accessible prices that make Domaines Paul Mas wines an everyday luxury”.
Jean-Claude’s commitment to the environment is evident on every bottle of wine, with Luxe Rural clearly embossed on each label. This represents the winery’s deference to its rural roots and the land, but also a promise to make value wines with authenticity and refinement.
Fourth-generation vintner Jean-Claude Mas has blazed the trail for premium winemaking in the Languedoc region. Since taking the helm of the Mas family’s centuries-old estate in 2000, his driving mission has been to use only premium quality grapes to craft superior wines with a modern, New World flair. Beginning with the original 86-acre estate, he has since grown the winery to a 1000-acre enterprise with a commitment to sustainable viticulture; he also contracts with 80 growers that collectively farm nearly 2000 acres, making Domaines Paul Mas one of the Languedoc’s most influential wineries. Above all, Jean-Claude strives to make wines with authenticity and refinement, the end result of which is a family of magnificently charming wines that burst with personality and express their unique terroir.
Jean-Claude got the wine bug at the age of three when, during harvest, he snuck away from his mother and ran two miles to find his grandfather at work in the cellar.
This innate curiosity and passion for the world of wine remained a core theme in his life as he worked his way through college and a career that took him to various points on the globe before finding his way back home to take over the family winery.
Jean-Claude Mas is often described as a pioneer from the “New Languedoc,” and belongs to the new wave of French winemakers whose mission is to return Languedoc, a region where wine production goes back to more than 2000 years, to its former glory.
With several wine labels under the Domaines Paul Mas brand now available in 45 countries in 5 continents, Jean-Claude is well on his way to doing just that.
